Michael Okpara University student wins NSA statistics contest

 A final year student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Merua Goodluck Ozoemela, has emerged as the overall best winner out of the 42 contestants that participated in the 2019 Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA) Competition held in Abuja.
The Director/CEO of the National Statistics Centre, Professor Stephen Ona, announced Ozoemela as the overall winner of the competition and decorated him with a gold medal. 
18 other contestants also won different categories of medals; three gold, six silver and 9 bronze medals. The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, emerged best out of the 21 tertiary institutions that participated in the competition. 
Speaking at the ceremony to mark the end of the competition, the Statistician General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, has encouraged the students to take mathematics and statistics serious as no nation can develop without data. Represented NBS’ Director, Field Services and Methodology,
Alhaji Samanja Bappayo, the Statistician-General said for the first time in Nigeria, the government has recognised the importance of data and statistics use is at its peak in the country now. He urged students of mathematics and statistics to be focused as their services would be of need to the country.
The Director/CEO of the National Statistics Centre, Professor Stephen Ona, said the competition, being the second edition, was meant to stimulate students’ interest in statistics.
The NSA president, Prof. Sidney Onyeagu, said that the competition was aimed at rekindling the dwindling interest of students in statistics.
Onyeagu observed that the competition would promote students’ interest in statistics as a career prospect as well as improve on their communication and knowledge in certain difficult areas of statistics.
